The only knitwear care guide you need

Wash less, fold (never hang), and store smart. Make your favorite pieces last for years.

Folded knitwear

Good knitwear is an investment. Treat it well and it will outlast every fast-fashion alternative in your drawer. The whole method fits in three habits: wash less, dry flat, store folded.

Wash less than you think

Wool is naturally antibacterial and self-cleaning. Most of what a sweater needs after a wear is air, not water.

  • Air it overnight, inside out, away from direct sun.
  • Spot-clean small marks with cold water and a drop of wool soap.
  • A full wash every 8–10 wears is plenty.
The washing machine ages a sweater more in one cycle than a winter of wearing it.
Mara Lin Care notes

When you do wash

Cold water, wool cycle or hand wash, and a proper wool detergent — never regular detergent, and never softener. Press the water out between two towels; wringing is how sweaters lose their shoulders.

Dry flat, always

Gravity is the enemy: a wet sweater on a hanger grows half a size by dinner. Reshape it on a towel, walk away for a day, and it comes back exactly as it left.

Storage and the pilling question

Fold knits on a shelf with room to breathe; cedar blocks keep moths honest. And pilling is not a defect — it is short fibers surfacing with friction. Two passes with a fabric comb after the third or fourth wear and the surface settles for good.

That's the whole guide. Three habits, five minutes a month, and your favorite pieces stop being seasonal purchases and start being yours.
